Monthly Archives: April 2013

It’s raining.

It’s raining, and I’m wearing a long skirt. There are worms all over the ground, so it’s like a game to avoid stepping on one or getting it up my skirt- ICK! This is also the last day that I must wear a skirt and scarf. I admit, I’m excited about wearing pants tomorrow, and not having to wear a scarf. I mentioned before that I don’t actually mind wearing skirts, so I think I will keep on wearing them from time to time. However, something must go, and that something is wearing scarves! I did not anticipate just how hot I’d be wearing scarves all the time! I guess they really do what they’re supposed to…
Just in case you were bummed out about not seeing Michael and I post anymore, don’t worry- we’ll still be here! After all, there are some things on our rules list that we just won’t live without, which may be contrary to the lives of other people. I’d like to think that we bring hope to others wishing to express their faith in their daily lives, and some questions answered to those who don’t believe in God. We’re not saying every Christian should live this way, this is just the way we feel personally convicted to live- and we accept all people, skirts or pants 🙂

Last Picture!

Well, my hair has officially hit the point where a part is almost a must…

I have to admit that the beard has kind of grown on me (no pun intended). The hair, not so much. So, what will I keep? I’m thinking I’ll keep the beard  and buzz the hair. What do you think?

I will post a new picture once it is done.

Have a bit of extra time?

Here are just a few links to pages I found interesting through the past few days. It is by no means an exhaustive list! I can’t say if they are all correct, or incorrect- I’ll leave the judgement to you:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJ9XRCYgtRU -A man speaking about why women should wear head coverings

Why is the world so conflicted on different messages?

I can see May 1st on the 10 day forecast now…the day I can finally go back to wearing pants! Or….will I?

When I start any project, like this month of living Biblically, I almost always go into the project prepared to do a little research. For this month, I obviously needed to use the Bible as my number one tool, but after that, there were several books I referenced for ideas. One of my biggest questions was why some women choose to wear skirts and dresses exclusively, and why some don’t. My family and friends are all in the ‘don’t’ category. Many of the women who do point to Deut. 22:5 as their reference point, which tells us that men should not wear women’s clothing, and women should not wear men’s clothing. This being said, some argue that pants belong to men and skirts belong to women. Even more important to some women is the modesty fact, which also cannot be fulfilled while wearing pants, and must be fulfilled by wearing skirts that cover at least the knee. Some women also claim that men tend to look at parts of the body rather than the face when wearing pants.

So, does this mean that I will be wearing skirts exclusively from now on, or will I go back to wearing pants? I must admit, I do miss my pants, and I believe there are some things that are much more modest in pants anyway. That being said, I’ve always enjoyed wearing skirts too, so don’t be surprised if you see me in skirts more often…

Work, work, work….

As this month goes on, I am finding it harder and harder to find the line between work and rest on the Sabbath. The first couple Sundays were fairly easy, but this Sunday was quite difficult. My Dad and sisters decided to redecorate my parents bedroom while my Mom and her Mom were visiting my Uncle in New Orleans. I was working all day Saturday at the church when they decided to do this and got a bit of a surprise myself. Anyway, Sunday came around and I was home for a short time between church services and was asked to help with some stuff in the room. I found myself debating as to how much I could actually help with before I would be considered working. In reality, doing anything at all to help with the room would be considered work no matter how light or heavy the lifting. At the same time, as Christians, we are taught to help those who ask and even those who do not. Even Jesus worked on the Sabbath. I’m curious, what would you have done?

I feel I should tell you, I did end up helping move a couple of the larger pieces of furniture. I may have helped with more had I not had to leave again to go back to church.

I mentioned above that I spent all day Saturday working at the church. I have to say, it is amazing how satisfying it is to work for the Lord. Myself and five others spent the day wiring in clean circuits for our church’s audio/video systems as well as relocating the systems. It was a great day full of not just work for the Lord, but also fellowship with each other. This is a project we have been working on since we started upgrading our systems over a year ago and, with the exception of some minor detail work and the building of a new desk to replace the current tables, we are finally done! It took longer than anticipated, but then again, the Lord probably has a reason for that. It is amazing what work can be accomplished when done through and for God.

Thinking Ahead

In keeping the Sabbath, we have chosen to not do any work except that of the church. This includes school work. Of course as part of not doing work on the Sabbath, we must plan ahead and get the work done in advance. Some, like myself, are procrastinators and typically wait until the last minute to do homework. I find myself tonight working hard on a paper due tomorrow night questioning whether or not I’ll be able to have it done on time. I know that with God’s help I can do anything, but I think that God may be teaching me a lesson this time. And so, it is back to work for me. I will be back later this week with an updated photo and more, once God and I get past this paper.

Whoops!

Well, what do you know….for the past two days I have completely forgotten to cover my head while in prayer! It was not until tonight that it dawned on me- my head is bare, and I’m praying! And while I’m confessing, I’ll admit that I may have said a few bad words today, and that I have complained about a few people (and the freezing rain alert!) as well. I’ll try harder in the next few days, that’s for certain.

This makes me think a bit, though: why do we even have rules from the Bible, and why bother following them? This could be a very long answer, one I’m sure to talk about in the future, so I’ll try to be succinct here. One of the most important answers is respect. Yeah, R-E-S-P-E-C-T kind of respect. Respect for God- He made this earth, He rules over us, let’s follow His rules! Respect for others-really, this one was learned in elementary school. Don’t do things to others that you wouldn’t want them to do to you. And finally, respect for yourself. Your body is not technically yours, it belongs to God, so treat it nicely! Keep yourself healthy, dress respectfully, and be happy!

Little Life Lessons in Disguise

I cannot lie- these past two days have been tough! I got my jury summons in the mail a few weeks ago and groaned. Then forgot about it…..until a few days ago, when I realized I had to appear April 8th (yesterday). There were so many reasons in my head why I could not go: homework, sleep, wedding planning. Unfortunately, none were truly valid excuses, so I got up and made my way to the courthouse yesterday morning. Although I was grumbling the whole time, I was optimistic that the process would go quickly, and I’d be home by noon yesterday for lunch. HA!

Let me tell you a story about a girl named Stephanie. She was doing a really great job of keeping calm and not complaining too much…but when jury duty stretched out into yesterday afternoon, patience was gone. And when I learned I had to come back today, I was extremely grumpy! After two full days of jury duty (I was in the last panel for questioning, but was not picked) I must admit that I am tired, hungry, and grumpy. I had forgotten my scarf at home, so my head was uncovered in prayer today. I had optimistically forgotten my lunch at home, hoping I’d be home to stay home, but no…

God had some serious tests of patience for me! Just when I thought I had perfected that skill, He showed me that there is always room for improvement! I am slowly learning that the more you trust in God, the more He shows His presence and mercy. Learning these things in Sunday School ten years ago, and living these things are two very different things to be sure!
